Under four hours pleasant driving from central Sydney, a special country experience awaits you, offering world renowned wines, great places to stay, quality foods of the region, outstanding art and ceramics and an opportunity to experience the history and heritage of Australia at a grass roots level.
The English translation for Mudgee is Nest in the Hills and describes the large undulating valley ringed by ancient, extinct volcanoes. This valley is now home to Mudgee and nearby towns. In Aboriginal mythology, this distinctive landform provided the semblance of a gigantic nest. And to this day, the nest continues to nurture many fields of human endeavor from literature, the performing and creative arts, mining, fine wool and livestock production and of course one of the most sublime creations of man, the production of fine wine.
Within the bounds of Mudgee, Gulgong and nearby towns, the visitor can see, touch, taste, hear and come to understand the true country experience that has shaped the nation we enjoy today.
Spring and autumn are characterized by moderate daytime temperatures and cool nights. Winters are ideal for exploring the countryside by day and nestling before an open fire at night. Summers, when the wine season comes to the fore, the days are warm to hot but delightfully cool in the evenings.
For the adventurous, the region offers 4 WD activities, bush walking and canoeing, fishing, gold panning and exploration of the surrounding towns and villages. Lovers of art, antiques and ceramics will enjoy the year round displays. For the devotees of food and wine, over 25 cellar doors and a wide choice of eateries. There's something for everyone.
The region is renowned for its wide choice of conserves, tapenades, mustards, wine jellies, vinegars, olive oils and honeys. These are sure to keep fond memories of the region alive well beyond the date of departure.
Throughout the year there's much happening including; The Wine Celebration in September, The Henry Lawson Festival (Gulgong) - June, the Mudgee Small Farm Field Days - July, the Huntington Music Festival -November-December, the Mudgee Cup race meeting - December, the Gulgong Folk Festival, December-January, just to name a few.
