Lea Castle
Located on the shore of the River Barrow near Portarlington, once the stronghold of the 2nd Baron of Offaly, Maurice Fitzgerald. In 1315 it was burnt by Edward Bruce, who was given an Irish kingship when he came to Ireland trying to divert English military attention from his brother Robert the Bruce in Scotland. In 1650 the castle was blown up by Cromwell's forces.

Rock of Dunamase
Located 6km east of Portlaoise along the Stradbally road, a limestone hill covered with the remains of fortifications. It was given away by Dermot MacMurrough, king of Leinster, as part of his daughter Aoife's dowry when she married Strongbow, the Norman Invader if Ireland, in 1170. It was later reinforced with three baileys, built by William Marshall, Strongbow's successor. At the end of the 14th-century the rock was captured from the English by a local clan, the O'Mores. In 1641 is was retaken by Charles Coote, one of Cromwell's most able leaders in Ireland, five years later it was recaptured by Catholic forces but in 1650 it was finally wrecked by Cromwell's henchmen Reynolds and Hewson.
