Rain Forest (10 miles east)It's the only tropical rain forest in the U.S. National forest System. It differs significantly from all the other U.S. National Forests because of its year-round tropical climate and immense biodiversity. Average temperature is 77.9° F at the lower elevations and 65.3° F at elevations above 3,280 ft. It rains almost everyday. It rains more in spring and fall.
Fajardo (23 miles east) Fajardo is one of the most originally beautiful spots on the island's shores. It's major boating center, with a wide range of rentals and charters available, with daily and sport-diving excursions as well as <br>scheduled ferries and air service carrying passengers and cargo to Culebra and Vieques. Do not miss the Seven Seas Beach near Las Cabezas de San Juan. <
Las Cabezas de San Juan in Fajardo is the most complete nature reserve in Puerto Rico, it invites you to experience every major tropical habitat unique to the island. On the tour you will visit mangroves, a<br>rocky beach, a lagoon, and a lighthouse. Do not miss the bioluminescent bay. Reservations required.
Isla Verde (14 miles west) Isla Verde is one of the main tourist area in Puerto Rico and has one of the finest beaches, Isla Verde Beach. The area offers a wide variety of restaurants and activities. Most major hotels are located in Isla<br>Verde, Marriott Courtyard, Hampton Inn, Ritz-Carlton, Embassy Suites, and Holiday Inn to name a few. The international airport is located in Isla Verde.
Luquillo Beach (17 miles east) According to the Frommer's guide, Luquillo Beach is the island's best and most popular public stretch of sand. From here, you can easily explore El Yunque rainforest. "Luquillo" is a Spanish adaptation of Yukiyu,the god believed by the Taínos to inhabit El Yunque. Facilities inside include a cafeteria, lockers, and bathrooms. Closed on Mondays.
Condado (18 miles west) Condado is a city within San Juan where major hotels, night clubs and restaurants are located on the Condado Strip, Ashford Avenue. It's a pedrestrian friendly area, do not miss the new park Ventanas al Mar or Windows to the Sea, with shops, outdoor cafes, and live music on weekends.
Old San Juan (20 miles west) A visit to Old San Juan is an essential part of any trip to Puerto Rico. The city, originally envisioned as a military stronghold, lays claim to a past that is still visible in the architecture and layout of the city. Today, Old San Juan is a much-visited tourist attraction and a congenial place to live.
Rincon (110 miles west) On the westernmost point of the island is Rincón. Surfers are particularly attracted the beaches here, which rank among the finest surfing spots in the world. Endangered humpback whales winter here,<br>attracting a growing number of whale-watchers from December to March.
Ponce (81 miles south) "The Pearl of the South," Ponce was named after Loíza Ponce de León, great-grandson of Juan Ponce de León. Founded in 1692, Ponce is today Puerto Rico's principal shipping port on the Caribbean. The city is well kept and attractive. A suggestion of a provincial Mediterranean town lingers in the air. Do not miss the Museo de Arte de Ponce.
