Saint Augustine Florida is a quaint little city that retains the charm from it's historical past. It is a blending of Spanish forts and architecture with elaborate hotels built for the wealthy families of the robber baron era. It is protected from the exposure of the open ocean by the intracoastal waterway and Anastasia Island. The harbor is a docking port for many private boats and they sail or motor from the Caribbean to the northern coastal waters of the Americas.
Henry Flagler, one of the founding fathers of St. Augustine, had partnered with JD Rockefeller to create Standard Oil. Flagler was a dreamer with expansionistic ideas. When he saw the quaint town of St. Augustine he had visions of transforming this tiny village into a resort for the rich and famous. When he realized that transportation to his newly created resort was in jeopardy he accumulated railroads and eventually built the first railroad along the east coast of Florida all the way to Key West. This was considered a monumental accomplishment because the engineering complexity for building a railroad that can traverse the Florida Keys had never been accomplished before.
There is another side to St. Augustine. It's beach. The beach is on the eastern side of Anastasia Island and that is where you will find St Augustine vacation rentals.
On St Augustine beach everything is casual. On good surf days the employees of the local businesses can be found surfing. This is the area where the majority of St Augustine vacation properties can be found.
Saint Augustine has a reputation as an artist community. On the first Friday of the each month there is an art walk. It is sponsored by the majority of the art galleries located through out the city. Each gallery offers wine and appetizers and a few have local jazz bands playing. It is an eclectic night, as you drink wine and party from one gallery to another. An electric train is available and makes stops at each gallery through out the evening. Or you can enjoy a walk along the brick cobblestone streets and listen to the clip clop of the horse drawn carriages in the night air.
