Kilauea Lighthouse and Wildlife sanctuary; snorkeling with tropical fish and maybe even sea turtles; spot dolphins, and in season, whales; boat trips or hiking up he Kalalau Coast; shopping in Kilauea or Hanalei; uncrowded white sand beaches; golf courses, including the world class Princeville Course; horseback riding; tropical rainforest and beautiful waterfalls everywhere.
Rock Quarry Beach: 2.8 miles/5 minutes by car. The Kilauea River, which also runs along the opposite side of Liliuokalani Street from our house, empties into the ocean at Rock Quarry Beach. There is a warm, shallow, sandy area on the river side which toddlers love. You can canoe up the Kilauea River for about 3/4 mile. The surf is excellent for boogie boarding. Mostly local residents frequent this uncrowded beach, and few tourists know about it.
Secret Beach: 4 minutes by car + 6 more minutes down a well worn, though slightly steep (in places) trail. Stunning white sand beach with picture perfect view of the Kilauea lighthouse at the far end. Usually nearly empty of people. Clothing seems optional at this beach. Look for pods of dolphins jumping just off shore.
Kalihiwai Beach: 2.8 miles/5 minutes by car takes you right to the water's edge. Picnic tables. The warm, quiet Kalihiwai River is a gem of a canoe trip. You paddle about a mile, then hike about 50 yards along the river bed to a trail leading directly to the triple falls. (You see these falls from the highway as you cross the Kalihiwai Bridge.) Kalihiwai has good waves for boogie boarding.
Anini Beach: 6 minutes by car. Easy access and public restrooms. The polo field is across the road from the beach. There is a small admission fee per car for the Sunday polo games, but you can opt to watch from the road for free. Polo season runs late April through September.
