Cat Island is a long narrow island south of Eleuthera and north of Long Island. Cat Island is considered one of the "Out Islands" of the Bahamas which means that the island is sparsely settled and naturally beautiful. It is believed that Cat Island was name after the pirate Arthur Catt (a friend of Blackbeard). The island is only 150 square miles, 48 miles long and has a population under 2,000. Cat Island is the perfect diving destination with coral reefs and blue holes, walls, caves and shipwrecks scattered off the coast of the island. Nowadays, the island is famous for being the boyhood home of Sir Sidney Poitier. An economic crop that is special to the island is cascarilla bark which is sent to Italy as one of the major ingredients in the famous Italian drink, Compari.
