The Santa Catarina Region is located in the southern part of Brazil facing the Atlantic Ocean and is one of Brazil's smallest states. The area was claimed by the Portuguese crown in 1532 but it was the Spanish who established the first settlement. The capital of Santa Catarina is Florianopolis which is located on the Santa Catarina Island and also on the mainland. The eastern region of Santa Catarina is noted for its amazing coastal scenery and beautiful beaches. Further inland are the mountains of the Serra do Mar which separate the large plateau on the west from the coastal area in the east. Immigration in the 19th-20th centuries to Santa Catarina mainly originated from Germany, Austria and Italy. Which was a part of the larger Brazil immigration policy in an effort to help populate certain regions.
