Limon is located on the eastern coast of Costa Rica and extends from the Nicaragua to Panama and faces the Caribbean. The capital of Limon is Puerto Limon. This region of Costa Rica has been a top producer of bananas for over 100 years which were started by the United Fruit Company to establish a supply of bananas for the American market. The areas in the north, Barra del Colorado and Tortuguero, are known for their mangrove swamps and loggerhead, leatherback, and hawksbill turtles. The Cahuita National Park is located along the Caribbean coast of Limon Costa Rica. The park encompasses a 600 acre reef and offers protection to the numerous species of coral, mollusks, and fish. The land portion of the Cahuita National Park protects the beaches in the area and numerous mammals and birds that are endemic to the region. Another great park to visit in Limon is the Tortuguero National Park, which means ‘Region of Turtles’ in Spanish. It is 19,000 hectares that is dedicated to the nesting of the leatherback sea turtles, hawksbill sea turtles and loggerhead sea turtles.
