Wiltshire is a landlocked region in southwest England and it is located in a region that is known unofficially as "The West Country". "The West Country" includes several regions of England: Gloucestershire, Wiltshire, Somerset, Dorset, Devon, Cornwall and The Isles of Scilly. Wiltshire's main city is Salisbury and it is noted for it's cathedral which was built between 1220 and 1258. The area of Wiltshire is very rural with a chalk downland and contains the historic area of the "Salisbury Plain". This is an area where there have been found Iron Age forts, Roman roads, and chalk carvings etched into the hills of the surrounding landscape. Within the area of the "Salisbury Plain" is the famous Stonehenge ring which was constructed in 3000-2000BC. There are numerous parks and gardens that are open for visitors in the area: Abbey House Gardens, Avebury Manor Garden, Great Chalfield Manor and Garden, Lacock Abbey Garden, Corsham Court and the Longleat Garden. All of these attractions are very popular with family vacations in Wiltshire.
