The Rhone Alps Region has been combined with the Auvergne Region as of 2016. The capital of the region is the city of Lyon with 2.1 million inhabitants and has a history that extends back to the Middle Ages. Lyon is known for its historical architecture and a major center to experience French cuisine. The Alpes Region is located in the far eastern section of France where the Alpes Mountain Range rises to over 15,000 feet at the rock summit of Mont Blanc, France. These mountains are known as the Graian Alps mountain range and they extend from Italy and Switzerland through France. The site of the first winter Olympics was held in 1924 at the town of Chamonix, which is located in the Haute Savoy section of the French Alps. The most popular section of the French Alps is located in Les Trois Vallées where you will find 338 slopes stretching across 600 km of pistes.
