Guanajuato vacation destinations are located in a landlocked region that has played an important part in the history of the independence of Mexico. It is also the name of the administrative city for the region, which was established in 1554. The discovery of silver in 1552 brought the Spanish to the region and resulted in the establishment of the first town in the area; San Miguel de Allende. And with the Spanish and the discovery of silver came the establishment of the Royal Mines which helped make Taxco Silver Capital of the world. The region is also known for being the birthplace of Mexican Independence and the home Miguel Hidalgo, a parish priest who spearheaded the movement and declared war on Spain in September 16, 1810. He marched through the region calling everyone to join the revolution and gained many notable followers. The region the Sierra Madre mountains rise up in the center of the region and form a dramatic backdrop for surrounding the villages. Many famous writers and artists have found the atmosphere conducive to their artistic endeavors and call this region home. It is also the birthplace of Diego Riviera who lived in Guanajuato City.
