The department of Rivas is located on the strip of land that separates the Pacific Ocean from Lago Nicaragua. Rivas also includes Ometepe island that was formed by two volcanoes rising from Lake Nicaragua. There are multiple beaches that stretch along the coast. It is a surfer's paradise with plenty of waves and sandy beaches. Some of the beaches in Rivas are: El Astillero Beach, Colorado Beach, El Coco Beach, El Ostional Beach, Maderas Beach, Majagual Beach and Marsella Beach. The historical part of the Rivas Department can be found in the administrative city of Rivas. There you will find old colonial churches and the Museum of Anthropology and History of Rivas which houses pre Colombian artifacts.
