Stirling destinations are found in the heart of Scotland, surrounded by Clackmannanshire, North Lanarkshire, Falkirk, Perth and Kinross, and Argyll and Bute. The historic city of Stirling is the true jewel in the region's crown and is a must-see for every visitor to Scotland. This heritage capital of Scotland is popular for Stirling family vacations and is clustered around the majestic Stirling Castle, perched on top of an extinct volcano. A medieval old town surrounds the castle, and the one-mile walk from here to the bustling city center is studded with immaculately preserved medieval churches and renaissance buildings. At a short walk from the Castle, you can see the fabled Stirling Bridge, where William Wallace (of Braveheart fame) defeated the English forces in 1297. The 220-feet-high National Wallace Monument stands on a nearby hill, and if you can climb the 246 steps to the Monument, you can enjoy spectacular views of the River Forth and Loch Lomond, which is accessible at a 30 minutes drive/bus-ride to the northwest of Stirling. On your way, do stop at Callander for exhilarating riverside walks along the River Teith, and drive another 30 minutes to the north to see the spectacular Falls of Dochart at Killin. Bridge of Allan, the spa town where legends like Robert Louis Stevenson and Charles Dickens used to bathe, is located just to the north of the city, and to the northeast is the breathtaking Alva Glen with its five wonderful waterfalls. The mythical village of Drymen, from where the famous Highland walking track "Rob Roy Way" starts, is located in the southwest of the Stirling region.
