Arcos de la Frontera Vacations: Things to see while on vacation in Arcos de la Frontera Andalucia

Arcos de la Frontera is a town and a municipality at the same time of Sierra de Cadiz, the Cadiz province of Andalusia in Spain. The town is located on the north, west and south part of the banks of Guadalete river that flows on 3 sides of the town under the vertical cliffs, all the way to Jerez and Cadiz Bay. This town commands a nice vista on top of a sandstone ridge – here the peak San Cristobal and Guadalete Valley are easily seen. This town has gained the name by the position it had of being a frontier of the Spanish battle with the Moors. This town is basically positioned on a huge rock that is bounded on 3 sides and is incredibly rich with Moorish architecture, and Gothic churches and objects too. For example, such churches are the Santa Maria de la Asuncion and San Pedro as well, and other addition objects of 16th and 18th century. The Romans called it Colonia Arcensum and the Moors called it Medina Arkosh. This town was taken primarily for the Christians by Alfonso X of Castile, back in 1264 and became a real town in 1472. In the medieval times, this town was right on the border between the Muslim and Christian parts of Spain. Now, this is a center for agriculture and work of manufacturing. As of lately, tourism has flourished in this Spanish location.

Arcos de la Frontera Geography

What makes a vacation in Arcos de la Frontera so spectacular is the town's location on a cliff, on the right side of the river bank and also positioned 50 meters above the river and within 195 meters above the level of the castle. This spot is the starting place for the main tour of Pueblos Blancos or the ‘white villages’ of Andalucia. Here nature is gorgeous with a gorgeous landscape. A vacation in Arcos de la Frontera is perfect for many outdoor activities like hiking, horse riding, mountain biking as well as paragliding and hang-gliding. Vegetation here is quite varied and unique plant species can be seen on high or middle areas adequately. Right next to the river, there is a riverbank forest with black and white poplars, and mace, ash trees and oleanders too. As you move further from the water area, there is a gorgeous landscape of many colors with fruit orchards and vegetable gardens. This region is most famous for citrus fruits.
