Ankara Vacations: Things to see while on vacation in Ankara Eastern Anatolie

Ankara Geography

Ankara has been the capital of Turkey since the the country became an independent republic in 1923. It is the country’s second largest city by population, and the third by acreage. The city is located in the region of highlands known as Central Anatolia, “the heart of Turkey.”

Ankara lies on the far eastern side of the Anatolian Plateau, and is bordered by two rivers, the Kizilirmak and the Sakarya. It’s also surrounded by four mountains. The city’s elevation is 850 meters, or 2800 feet, above sea level. Ankara’s climate is classified as hot summer Mediterranean or steppe, depending on which system is used, and it is a dry city. Yet it’s also known as a green city, due to the ratio of green areas to inhabitants. Along with the surrounding region, Ankara experiences hot, dry summers and cold, snowy winters, with most of its meager rainfall concentrated in the spring and fall. An average year’s rainfall totals less than 25 centimeters.

The historical part of Ankara is the old city, called Ulus, in the city center, but for a more authentic taste of Ankara’s ancient past, the Hamamonu District is a restored neighborhood.
