St Augustine Vacations: Things to see while on vacation in St Augustine Florida

CULTURAL LANDSCAPE OF ST AUGUSTINE FLORIDA

St Augustine Florida is a quaint historic beach town that loves culture. It is as if St Augustine has two different faces. The downtown area is oozing with culture and history. Originally claimed by the Spanish in the 1500's the area was used mainly as a military outpost by the Spaniards. The town still has the old 17th century military fortress, Castillo de San Marcos standing, which is considered the oldest fortress in the United States. Much later during the 1880's the town caught the eye of Henry Flagler, a partner in the Rockefeller Railroad. He thought the area would be a perfect resort destination. Henry Flagler spared no expense in building an exclusive hotel, the Ponce de Leon, which is known today as Flagler College. Tiffany chandeliers were installed and he hired Thomas Edison to install lighting. Henry Flagler was also instrumental in establishing an artist colony in St Augustine, mainly to entertain the tourists he envisioned staying in his resort. St Augustine is also the site of Casa Monica, one of the oldest hotels in the USA, which was built in 1800's and is a great place to enjoy afternoon tea. However, the majority of our properties are beachfront rentals in St Augustine Fl.
