Abruzzo is an autonomous region of Tuscany that lies just to the east of Rome. The landscape of this region is varied with mountains and beaches all within a short distance from each other. The Apennine mountains provinde 21 ski areas in along the peninsula region of Italy and many of the mountains are as high as those in the Alps. Abruzzo also has 129 km of beaches along its southern coastline. Although Abruzzo is relatively unknown by tourists outside of Italy; it has a large designated park area with the Abruzzo National Park being the most prominent.
Historically Abruzzo has been identified with Southern Italy and the population had a large portion of population whose wages were far below the wages found in the horthern and industrial part of Italy. Recently rail lines have been installed in the region and a major highway to Rome provides access to the area. These modernization efforts plus government incentives have brought industries to the area and increased the standard of living.
The art of wine has undergone changes recently and their wines are moving away from mass produced wine to more boutique wines. The wines of this region are known as The four DOC produced in Abruzzo are the Contro Guerra, Trebbiano d'Abruzzo, Montepulciano d'Abruzzo and Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Colline Teramane.
