Ile de France Vacations

Ile de France is a region located in the north central area of France that is bordered by the regions of Picardy, Burgundy, Upper Normandy, Champagne and Centre. Ile de France means the “Island of France,” which may have come from the term “Liddle Franke,” meaning “Little France” in Frankish. The island in Ile de France's name is most likely referring to the land between the Marne, Oise and Seine Rivers. The Seine River, France’s second-largest river, runs through the region. Ile de France, France is the most populated region in the country, with approximately twelve million inhabitants (about 19% of France’s overall population). Also, about 28% of France’s national territory is found in Ile de France, making the region the largest in Europe. The region consists of eight departments: Yvelines, Val-d'Oise, Val-de-Marne, Seine-et-Marne, Seine-Saint-Denis, Hauts-de-Seine, Essonne and Paris. Paris is the capital of France and the most well-known city in Ile de France. The majority of the residents in Ile de France, France live in Paris. Paris has been called a variety of names, including the “City of Love” and the “City of Lights.”
