The French West Indies is located in the arc of the Lesser Antilles and a section called the Leeward Islands. They consist of the islands of St Barts, the southern region of the island of St Martin plus Guadeloupe and Martinique. These islands are located in an arc just east of the British Virgin Islands and US Virgin Islands. These islands are covered in rainforest, waterfalls and beautiful beach destinations. Pierre Belain d'Esnambuc was a French trader who established the 1st permanent French Colony on the island of Martinique in 1635. He was a fur trader and also gained authority over the island. His nephew, Jacques Dyel du Parquet, became the first governor of the island and helped establish sugar cane as a viable product for export.
