Dodecanese islands Vacations

The Dodecanese Islands lie in southern region of the Aegean Sea. There are over 150 islands in the group, but only 26 of them are inhabited. Geographically they seem to be closer to Turkey than Greece. Their location has put the islands in the center of the evolving civilizations between Asia and Europe. Historically, their culture was influence by the Byzantine Empire, the Persian culture and then more recently the Ottoman Empire. The largest island is Rhodes is known for being the site one of the "7 great wonders of the Ancient World"; the Colossus of Rhodes statue; which was built in 280 B.C. but was destroyed 56 years later by an earthquake.
