The Ionian Islands are a group of large and small islands that extend off the west coast of mainland Greece and are an extremely popular tourist destination. They are also known as the Heptanese Islands (meaning the 7 islands). There are six major islands: Corfu, Paxos, Kefalonia, Zykanthos, Lefkada, and Ithaca all located in the Ionian Sea. Kythira, the seventh island is located much further south, below the Peloponnese peninsula. The island's proximity to other regions of Europe made them a popular target for various naval bases as the borders of England, France and Italy fluxuated over the centuries. The occupation by the British, Italians and French have created a diverse culture on the different islands. Travel to the islands is easy. There are airports located on these island cities: Corfu, Kefalonia and Zakynthos. And ferries are also an option.
